The quick answer: an 8 x 10 under a standard sofa, a 9 x 12 under a six-to-eight-seat dining table, a 9 x 12 under a king bed and an 8 x 10 under a queen. Everything else on this page explains why, and what to do when the room or the furniture does not match the standard. Because our fique rugs are woven to order, you are never stuck choosing between a size that is too small and one that is too big.

The three placement rules

  • All legs on. Every piece of furniture in the grouping sits fully on the rug, with 8 to 12 inches of rug showing beyond it. The most generous look, and the right one for large rooms and open plans.
  • Front legs on. The front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug, the back legs on the floor. Ties the group together with a smaller rug. The default for most living rooms.
  • Floating. The rug sits in front of the seating with no legs on it. Only works with a coffee table on the rug and a small, tight arrangement; otherwise it looks like an afterthought.

Whichever rule you use, keep the margin to the walls consistent: 12 to 18 inches of floor in most rooms, 6 to 8 in a small bedroom.

Living room

SeatingRug sizePlacement
Loveseat or small sofa (up to 72 in)6 x 9 ftFront legs on; small rooms
Standard sofa (78 to 90 in)8 x 10 ftFront legs of sofa and chairs on the rug
Sofa plus two armchairs9 x 12 ftFront legs on, or all legs on in a compact grouping

Our 8 x 10 rugs and 9 x 12 rugs pages show these two formats in the current weaves. For a longer discussion of proportion, read how to choose the right rug size.

Dining room

The one rule that matters here: the rug must extend 24 to 30 inches beyond the table edge on every side so the chairs stay on the rug when someone pushes back from the table. A chair with two legs on the rug and two on the floor rocks, and it wears the rug edge.

TableRug sizeNotes
Round, 48 in (4 seats)8 ft round or 8 x 8 ftMinimum 24 in clearance each side
Round, 60 in (6 seats)9 ft round or 9 x 9 ftAim for 30 in if the room allows
Rectangular, 36 x 72 in (6 seats)8 x 10 ftChairs stay on the rug when pulled out
Rectangular, 40 x 96 in (8 seats)9 x 12 ftCustom 9 x 13 ft if the room is long
Rectangular, 44 x 120 in (10 seats)10 x 14 ft or customAdd 54 to 60 in to each table dimension
Square, 54 in (4 to 8 seats)9 x 9 ft or 10 x 10 ftSquare rugs are a normal custom order

Bedroom

BedRug sizePlacement
King bed (76 x 80 in)9 x 12 ftUnder the bed, 24 to 36 in showing each side
King bed, nightstands off the rug8 x 10 ftRug starts just in front of the nightstands
Queen bed (60 x 80 in)8 x 10 ftThe most common bedroom size
Queen bed, runners insteadTwo 2.5 x 8 ft runnersOne each side of the bed
Full or twin bed6 x 9 ft or 5 x 8 ftRug placed under the lower two thirds of the bed

The goal in a bedroom is bare feet landing on fiber when you get out of bed. A rug that stops at the nightstands and shows 24 inches or more on each side does that. A pair of runners is a good answer in a narrow room or when the bed sits against a wall.

Home office

DeskRug sizeNotes
Desk 48 to 60 in, chair rolls behind6 x 9 ftAll desk legs and the full chair path on the rug
Desk 72 in or L-shaped8 x 10 ftKeep 36 in of rug behind the desk edge for the chair
Desk against a wall, small room5 x 8 ftTight flatweave so the chair rolls cleanly

A rolling chair needs the whole roll path on the rug, which means 36 inches of rug behind the desk edge, and a tight flatweave rather than a loop or bouclé. Our home office rug guide covers weave choice and pads.

Entry, hallway, kitchen and patio

SpaceRug sizeNotes
Standard hallway, 36 to 42 in wide2.5 ft wide runnerLeave 4 to 6 in of floor each side
Wide hallway, 48 in or more3 ft wide runnerLength 6 to 18 in short of the hall at each end
Entry, single door3 x 5 ft or 4 x 6 ftWider than the door opening
Entry, double door or foyer5 x 8 ft, 6 x 9 ft or roundRound rugs suit square foyers
Galley kitchen2.5 x 8 ft or 2.5 x 10 ft runnerCentered between counters
Kitchen islandRunner the length of the islandSized to the island plus 12 in each end
Covered patio or lanai seating8 x 10 ft or customCovered areas only; see outdoor notes below

For hallways, the runner should leave an even band of floor on both sides and stop short of each end rather than butting into a door. Standard runners come in fixed lengths; ours are woven to the exact hall. See hallway and entryway runner rugs. For outdoor spaces, natural fiber belongs under a roof: a covered patio or lanai with no rain exposure, never an open deck or a pool edge.

Standard US sizes versus custom

The standard American sizes are 3 x 5, 4 x 6, 5 x 8, 6 x 9, 8 x 10, 9 x 12, 10 x 14 and 12 x 15, plus 2.5 x 8 and 2.5 x 10 runners. They exist because machine-made rugs are cut to them. A handwoven fique rug is not cut from a roll; it is woven to the order, so a 7 x 11 for an awkward living room or a 2.5 x 23 runner for a long corridor is as straightforward to weave as a standard format. If the tables above put you between two standard sizes, that is the moment to specify the exact dimension instead. Our custom size area rugs page explains how to send the measurements.

How to measure and tape it out

  1. Measure the room wall to wall in both directions, and note doors, vents and any built-ins.
  2. Measure the furniture footprint: the outer edges of the sofa, chairs, bed or table as they will actually sit.
  3. Apply the rule you chose: add 8 to 12 inches beyond the footprint for all legs on, or set the rug edge under the front third of the seating for front legs on.
  4. Tape it on the floor with painter's tape at the proposed size and live with it for a day. Walk through it, pull the dining chairs out, open the doors.
  5. Check the clearances: 12 to 18 inches to the walls, doors that swing clear, and no vent sitting under the rug.
  6. Write down the final size in inches, width by length, and send it with a photo of the taped floor.

Common mistakes

  • Buying too small. By far the most frequent error. A 5 x 8 in front of a full sofa makes the room feel smaller, not larger.
  • Chairs half on, half off under a dining table. Add the 24 to 30 inches.
  • Ignoring the door swing. A thick rug under a door that opens inward will catch. Flatweaves help, but check the clearance.
  • Matching the rug to the room instead of the furniture. The rug belongs to the seating group, not to the walls.

Florida open-plan tips

South Florida homes tend to be one large tiled space holding a living area, a dining area and a kitchen. Rugs are what turn that space into rooms. Use one rug per zone, let each follow its own furniture group, and leave a clear walkway of bare tile between them rather than letting rugs touch. Keep the weaves related, for example the same fique in two colorways or two constructions, so the zones read as one home. Oversized living room rugs are normal here because the seating groups are large; this is where woven-to-order sizing earns its keep. And because tile is slippery and cool, always pair the rug with a felt-and-rubber pad.

Frequently asked questions

What size rug goes under a standard sofa?

For a sofa of 78 to 90 inches, an 8 x 10 rug lets the front legs of the sofa and the chairs sit on the rug. If two armchairs face the sofa, move up to 9 x 12. A sectional or a large seating group usually needs 10 x 14 or a custom size so the whole arrangement sits on the rug.

How much rug should extend beyond a dining table?

Add at least 24 inches on every side of the table, and 30 inches if the room allows, so the chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. A 36 x 72 inch table needs roughly an 8 x 10; a 40 x 96 inch table needs a 9 x 12 or a custom 9 x 13.

What size rug for a king bed?

A 9 x 12 placed under the bed leaves 24 to 36 inches of rug showing on each side and at the foot. If you want the nightstands off the rug, an 8 x 10 starting just in front of them works well. For a queen bed the same logic gives 8 x 10 or 6 x 9.

Should a rug be bigger or smaller than the room?

Smaller, by a consistent margin. Leave 12 to 18 inches of visible floor between the rug and the walls in most rooms, and 6 to 8 inches in a small bedroom. A rug that touches the walls looks like carpet; one that floats too small makes the furniture look adrift.

Can I order a rug in a size that is not standard?

Yes. Fique rugs from Terra 203 are handwoven to order, so any width and length is possible, including long runners, rounds, squares and oversized living room pieces. Send us the room dimensions or a furniture plan and we will suggest or confirm the size.
